Empowering South Dakota: The Economic and Environmental Benefits of the Summit Carbon Pipeline

The Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline is bringing transformative benefits to South Dakota by supporting the state’s crucial ethanol and agriculture industries while contributing to significant environmental progress. This innovative project spans 215 miles across South Dakota, capturing carbon dioxide emissions from ethanol plants and transporting them for secure sequestration. By reducing the carbon intensity of ethanol production, the pipeline strengthens South Dakota’s ethanol sector, which uses about half of the state’s corn crop and provides a high-value market for local farmers.

Beyond its environmental impact, the pipeline’s economic influence is substantial. Between 2021 and 2027, Summit’s construction investment in South Dakota is projected to reach $1.9 billion, supporting 1,086 annual jobs on average and injecting $476 million in labor income. Counties along the pipeline route will see substantial new property tax revenue, helping fund local schools, infrastructure, and public services.

When operational, the project will sustain 260 jobs annually and contribute $69 million in state and local taxes, supporting South Dakota’s communities and economy long-term. Summit Carbon Solutions is a valuable partner in South Dakota’s journey toward a sustainable and thriving future.
